How U.S. Companies Streamline Operations for Maximum Efficiency

CFE Media & Technology conducted a poll for AVEVA, an industrial software business, among decision-makers in automation and control engineering and industrial operations. The goal was to understand the issues they confront with typical HMI/SCADA. The following questions came naturally: What are the requirements for HMI/SCADA to maintain its position as the primary system for controlling and managing industrial processes?Survey results show a considerable movement towards HMI/SCADA as a service in discrete manufacturing, food and beverage, process production, and utilities industries.

To improve productivity, organizations are using cloud-based technologies and hybrid infrastructures.Subscription-based applications have obvious benefits, such as keeping systems up to date and maintained.Furthermore, analytic applications are becoming increasingly prevalent. Networks of networked gadgets have increased. New data sharing and management approaches, together with cloud connectivity, offer opportunities to scale systems and increase efficiency. Survey participants were divided into two groups: corporate managers (10%) and consultants and systems integrators (10%). (See .HMI/SCADA decision-makers in discrete manufacturing, food and beverage, and process production companies, as well as utilities, report major challenges with their current systems, including upgrades and maintenance (59%), data integration (49%), total cost of ownership (37%), and ease of change (37%). Approximately 60% of respondents are interested in increasing information analysis and reporting (59%), anomaly identification and resolution (51%), and operations visualization (40%). Our surveyed decision-makers are well-versed in current computing trends and workforce development needs. Half of respondents rated this as a top priority, very important, or important concern. (See Chart 7).Companies seek to improve HMI/SCADA system capabilities while also modifying deployment and management processes. Relying solely on retiring employees is not sustainable. Outdated systems limit innovation. Custom legacy systems lack upgrade, maintenance, and replacement strategies. Operations and engineering teams often lack the necessary tools for success.However, for these decision-makers, the issue is more fundamental. Over 70% of organizations report staff turnover of up to 30% per quarter.When selecting an HMI/SCADA vendor, 62% of respondents prioritize having access to videos and papers for operators.They prioritize strengthening knowledge retention as a key functional area. Manufacturing organizations may struggle to fill vacancies due to a lack of skills and workers. Overcompensation can lead to performance strains, worker burnout, and safety risks. HMI/SCADA can automate a variety of operations with current features like social collaboration, data sharing, and report generating.
The convergence of IT and OT has led to increased interest in industrial automation jobs among young people. To attract tech-savvy candidates who demand digital-infused professions, further efforts are required.
